Whether we live in an urban high-rise, a coastal cottage, a modern farmhouse or a city suburb, there are certain rooms in our homes that may make us feel cramped and confined. Small spaces in particular can make us uncomfortable, especially if the room is dark.
Regardless of the size of your living quarters, there are things you can do to make the space feel open and airy.

1. Color Is Key
In terms of proximity, darker and brighter colors advance while paler and muted colors recede. This means that the lighter the paint color, the more open the room will feel. Painting walls, baseboards and ceilings all the same color will magnify this effect.
2. Create and Enhance Vertical Lines
Vertical lines are dynamic and will make the space feel taller. You can create vertical lines by installing drapery panels and wall sconces, hanging full length mirrors or art, or installing tall skinny bookshelves in the room. If the room in question is a kitchen or bathroom, be sure to install cabinets that extend completely to the ceiling.
3. Scale for Balance
To create a feeling of space, it is important to limit the use of oversized furniture in the room. Scale makes a world of difference in creating balance. I always opt for low furniture that isn’t too heavy or grand.
4. Layers of Light
Be sure to use a combination of natural (if possible), overhead and portable lighting. Dimmers allow you to control the intensity of the light which can either open the space or create an intimate setting.
5. Organize and Declutter
Nothing closes a space more than overcrowding.
As you discover ways to work these changes into small spaces, your rooms will begin to feel more open. And I think you’ll also find them to be more welcoming and comfortable.
